I was particularly compelled by the use of strings in this track, especially the contrasts between and layering of long and held-out notes, aggressive and abrupt bow strokes, and the more soft and dainty moments. “Savior Complex” was one of my favorite tracks off the original album, and the new version absolutely blew me away. There is also an absolutely stunning, held out note change with the lyric “25 felt like flying.” There are some incredible instrumental moments, my personal favorites leading up to and at within the second chorus. Even better, all proceeds went to the Fair Fight Organization, which was founded by Stacey Abrams and promotes fair elections in Georgia and nationally, fighting against voter suppression and advocating for voter education. The song was available for a pay-what-you-want download from Bandcamp for one day only, amassing over 28,000 paid downloads and earning both Bridgers and Rogers their first No. And there was an added bonus: folk-pop artist Maggie Rogers accompanied to sing backup harmonies on the track. On election day, Bridgers tweeted “if trump loses i will cover iris by the goo goo dolls,” and, much to the joy of the nearly 70,000 people who liked the tweet, she delivered on November 13th.
